Class 1 District 6 Final Results

LaPlata edges Brashear for the boy's title and Linn County tops LaPlata for the girl's title.

For 31 minutes Friday night, two closely matched rivals fought it out for a district title. Through the 1st half, neither team could gain more than a point or two advantage and the score was tied at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, LaPlata briefly built a 5 point lead, but Brashear clawed their way back to take a 5 point lead of their own in the 4th quarter. LaPlata was no more willing to go away in the 4th than Brashear had been in the 3rd and tied the game once again. In the final minute it appeared that Brashear had finally gained the upper hand as they had possession of the ball and started to work the clock down for a final shot. LaPlata commited a foul trying to get the ball back, but that just put Brashear into the bonus where any further fouls would send the Tigers to the line with a chance to break the tie. As the game clock finally ticked into single digits, Brashear made their move and managed to get off a pair of hotly contested shots, but neither shot would fall. As the ball kicked off the rim after the 2nd shot, Brashear's Kale Watson soared high for the offensive board and a possible shot to bring victory to the Tigers. As he collected the rebound a hard body check and slap sent him sprawling to the floor and the ball rolling out of bounds. With the incredible noise from the excited crowd, everyone strained to hear the inevitable whistle as the final time ticked off with Watson on the floor and the ball rolling out of bounds. As the crowd hushed, it became apparent that no foul had been called, and the time that ticked off after the ball went out of bounds was not going to be placed back on the clock. At that point, the clock was reset for 4 minutes and overtime began. Two trips down the floor and two 3-pointers by LaPlata's Jordan Smith gave LaPlata an unsurmountable lead and they claimed their 2nd straight district title with an overtime 59-54 win. For Brashear, seniors Kale Watson and Jacob Shipman had 13 points each, Trae Treasure had 12, Kiley Watson had 6, and Ryan Ferdig scored 2 points. For LaPlata, Dusty Baker had 14 points, Taylor Wheeler had 11, Curtiss Bunch and Jordan Smith had 10 each, Jesse Schrader had 8, and Mike Eitel scored 6 points.
